Italy travel insurance
Planning a trip to Italy? From Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan and Naples to the Amalfi Coast, Lake Garda, Lake Como, Sicily and Sardinia, Italy is one of Europe’s great destinations for Irish travellers. Whether you’re heading away for a city break, summer holiday, wedding, honeymoon, food trip or cultural escape, it’s worth having the right travel insurance in place before you go.
Italy brings together ancient history, Renaissance art, coastal scenery, lakeside towns and some of the best food and wine in Europe. You might be walking through ancient Rome, visiting Pompeii, seeing Brunelleschi’s dome in Florence, exploring the canals of Venice, shopping in Milan or relaxing on the Amalfi Coast. What does Italy travel insurance cover?
Travel insurance for Italy can help protect you against a range of unexpected problems before and during your trip. Depending on the policy and level of cover you choose, this can include cancellation, emergency medical expenses, baggage, travel delays, personal liability and 24/7 emergency medical assistance. Before you travel, always read your policy wording so you understand what is covered, what is excluded and what limits apply.
Rome, Florence, Venice and Italian history
Italy is a dream destination for travellers who love history, art and architecture. You might be exploring the Colosseum and Roman Forum in Rome, following the story of Julius Caesar, visiting the Uffizi in Florence, seeing the work of Leonardo da Vinci, or admiring the engineering of Brunelleschi’s dome. From the Renaissance to Garibaldi and the unification of Italy, from the ruins of Pompeii to the palaces, churches and piazzas of its great cities, Italy is packed with places worth travelling for.
Food, wine, lakes and summer holidays
Italy is also perfect for slower, more relaxed holidays. You might be trying pizza in Naples, pasta in Bologna, lampredotto in Florence, tartufo in Umbria or gelato after dinner in Rome. You could be wine tasting in Tuscany, staying by Lake Garda or Lake Como, taking a coastal break on the Amalfi Coast, or travelling to Sicily or Sardinia for sunshine, beaches and long summer evenings. If your trip includes flights, accommodation, tours, wedding plans, restaurant bookings or activities, travel insurance can help protect the money you have spent if certain insured events affect your plans.
Do I need medical cover for Italy?
Irish travellers can use an EHIC for medically necessary state-provided healthcare in Italy, but an EHIC is not a replacement for travel insurance. It does not cover everything, such as private medical treatment, repatriation to Ireland, cancellation, baggage, delays or lost and stolen property. Travel insurance can give you broader protection for your trip, especially if you are travelling with family, attending a wedding, going on honeymoon, booking a summer holiday or paying in advance for flights, accommodation, tours or activities.
