What does long stay travel insurance cover?

Long stay travel insurance can cover a range of unexpected problems before and during an extended trip abroad. This can include cancellation before you travel, emergency medical treatment overseas, baggage problems, travel delays and emergency assistance while you are away.

Common areas of cover include:

  • Cancellation: If you need to cancel your long stay trip before you travel for an insured reason, such as unexpected illness.
  • Emergency medical expenses: If you become ill or are injured abroad and need urgent medical treatment during your trip.
  • Baggage cover: If your luggage is lost, stolen or damaged while you are travelling.
  • Travel delay: If your scheduled journey is delayed for a reason covered by your policy, such as adverse weather, strike action or mechanical issues.
  • Personal liability: If you are legally responsible for injuring someone or damaging their property while abroad.
  • Emergency assistance: Access to support if you need medical help while travelling.

The exact cover, limits and exclusions depend on your policy, so always read your policy wording before you travel.

Is long stay travel insurance right for me?

Long stay travel insurance may be right for you if you are planning an extended trip abroad and need cover for more than a standard short holiday. It can suit longer holidays, backpacking trips, extended stays with family or friends, business travel, gap year-style travel or longer visits to destinations such as Europe, the USA, Australia or Asia.

Think about where you are travelling, how long you will be away, who is travelling with you and what you plan to do during your trip. You should also consider whether you need extra cover for medical conditions, sports and activities, higher-value baggage, multiple destinations or other specific travel plans.

If you are taking one longer trip rather than several shorter trips throughout the year, long stay travel insurance may be more suitable than annual multi-trip cover.

Long stay, single trip or annual multi-trip travel insurance?

Single trip travel insurance is usually designed for one standard holiday or journey abroad. Annual multi-trip travel insurance can cover multiple trips over a 12-month period, with the maximum trip length depending on your age and the cover level you choose. Long stay travel insurance may be more suitable if you are planning one extended trip abroad.

If you are taking one longer trip, such as an extended holiday, backpacking trip, gap year-style journey or longer stay with family or friends, long stay travel insurance may give you a better fit than a standard single trip or annual multi-trip policy. If you expect to take several shorter trips during the year, annual multi-trip cover may be more convenient.

What is the maximum trip duration under a long stay travel insurance policy?

With InsureandGo, long stay travel insurance can cover a single return holiday or journey of up to 365 days if you are aged 65 or under, beginning and ending in Ireland.

If you are aged 66 or over, the maximum trip duration is limited to 31 days.

Always check your insurance certificate to confirm the period of cover that applies to your policy.

Can I buy long stay travel insurance after I have already left Ireland?

No, you should always arrange your travel insurance before you leave Ireland. The policy wording states that any trip that has already begun when you purchase the insurance will not be covered.

Can I get long stay travel insurance with a pre-existing medical condition?

Yes, but you need to declare any pre-existing medical conditions through our online medical screening process.

Claims arising from pre-existing medical conditions will not be covered unless the condition has been declared and accepted. If your health or medical status changes before you travel, you should tell InsureandGo before departure.

What happens if I cannot return home before my long stay policy ends?

If you cannot finish your holiday within the period shown on your insurance certificate because of an insured event, cover may be extended for up to 30 days at no extra charge.

This is subject to the policy wording, including the relevant exclusions and travel advice conditions.
